1992 300sl strange sound

on start up i'm getting a sound like a compressor .it seems to be coming from right front of engine .it goes off after a few minutes on idle .is this normal ?

Its normal to make a sucking noise when warming up,its the cold start device, do you mean a chugging noise, always hard to describe.

i think the cars have a air injector, this is normal it would explain the noise. it adds extra air into the engine, i think its something to do with the co levels, i had a prob with mine secondary air injector but it turmned out to be some pipes not connected as the cel light used to come on...

If your not getting the noise constantly i think u will be fine...

Its normal on the 3ltr and over engines. It is an air compressor which injects air into the exhaust when the engine starts so that the unburnt fuel does not ruin your cat. It runs for about 5 mins then cuts out.
