1993 124 Estate elec window problem

Hi - I have a problem with the near side front window - It will neither go up nor down( happily it is presently closed !)
When the switch is pressed for "up" or "down" there is a noise like " ratatat "- and the window does not move at all.
I have taken the door card off and when the switch is operated the regulator (toothed half circle ??) seems to budge slightly then stops. Having read old threads - am I correct in assuming that it is likely the regulator has gone ???
I note that to replace the regulator the window needs to be down - if that is so - how can I get the window down given the above circumstances ??
Any help would be much appreciated

Knackered regulator - the top teeth wear away. If you operate the switch and push the glass down it'll probably engage a tooth & pull it down

When you replace the regulator, shine a torch into the slit where the window comes out to make 100% sure that the front of the window has gone into the guide in the front of the door. Otherwise you will start the window going up which it will and then stop and if you do not stop quick enough it will shatter the glass. I know this from my own experience. You cannot always tell as it sit nicely on the regulator.
