1993 W124 220TE Engine Stalls Intermittently At Low rpm

I recently bought a 1993 220TE (W124) auto estate from a Mercedes Owner Club Member and discovered there is an intermittent problem with the engine.

With gearbox in “P” or “N” the engine starts nearly always first time (hot or cold) and idles at 1000-1100 rpm then gradually dropping down to about 750 rpm idle. Unfortunately and intermittently (usually at least once a day) the revs drop -sometime very quickly, down to 500- 450 rpm, leading to rough idling and engine stalling.

The intermittent problem also occurs when the car is being driven very slowly or when coming to a stop at traffic lights and junctions. The engine runs fine when the car is on the move where the RPM are not in the idle range.

Have carried out the following to remedy the problem without success:
Replaced the Over Voltage Protection relay – has not cured the intermittent fault.
Added Wynn’s Professional formula – Fuel System Cleaner into the petrol tank
Oil service, Maintenance service and 36,000-mile service (new fuel filter)

Could it be the throttle body?
Could it be an intermittent fault with one or both of the fuel pumps?
Any ideas on investigations would be very welcome.

Thank you for your time & I look forward to any replies.

hello and welcome.

I think that you can forget the fuel system as it uses a lot more fuel when driving than at idle.
Sadly I have lost my bosh injection book for your year and can only go up to 1990
Do the revs increase at idle when you put it in D normal increase 50-100rpm

Do you have a simple volt meter

Is it the same when cold or warm.

Hello Malcom,

Sorry couldn't get back to your reply earlier - have been not been away from the PC all day.

I don't have a simple voltmeter - but I could buy one - any recommendations?

The revs do not increase at idle when put into "D".
In "N" or "P" it revs at about 750 RPM - when put into "D" - the revs drop to about 550 RPM.

It is the same picture when cold or warm.

where do I go from here?

Thank You,

Douglas

Can anyone recommend a good repair manual for this model?

Still having problems with engine cutting out at low revs on an intermittent basis.

If the problem is not fuel delivery related as suggested by Malcolm - and it appears he should know given his level of expertise in this area.

Could it be a faulty engine management sensor?
But why only in the idling rev range?

Has anyone got the Bosh injection book for this model:

Date of First registration: Feb 1993
Engine ID: WDB1240822F2504781
Engine Numbers: 111960 22 261920

Come on you guys dig deep – I know someone out there has the missing piece to this jigsaw puzzle.

Looking forward to a flood of responses,

Douglas

Hi all

1992 300CE W124 M103 engine stalled twice in the past two days on small runs.

Brake, shift foot to the go pedal and press it.... and krump karump wobble blub then either stops competely or falters.

After the car had written off a 7 series BWM several years ago (no, it wasn't me), when it was repaired it used to display the same behaviour, this wasn't 100% fixed - the problem kind of went away.

Runs fine on "non idle" RPM it just has difficulty getting there....

Initial thoughts ?

Cheers

hi,
i had a '92 w124 230 which blew a head gasket, it didn't get hot and the head was not worked on for repair, but the car exhibited the same symptoms. i reckon there was a sticking valve or other minor problem, sold the car soon after.
cheers

just wondering if you sorted this problem. mine is a 1993 220te and is doing the exact same thing, but i am thinking that its related to the throttle position sensor due to its erratic nature.

let me know please.

Logically, if the problem is restricted to low-rev running it's related to idle stabilisation. AFAIK (I'm no petrol car expert) that's controlled by the ECU based on data from the MAF and a rotational speed sensor which is probably a crankshaft sensor. This then controls the throttle and the idle stabilisation valve, if the car has one. I'd look in those areas

The only 220 I know of that had idle problems required a new throttle body

I think that there are contacts in the throttle body that switch to idle all in the air flow housing

hi, thank you for the posts.

My car seems to idle at 500rpm when it actually runs, and now the problem has further developed such that on part throttle the car jerks and now on full throttle is starts missfiring, but at an intermediate throttle postion it runs fine. I will check the MAF sensor and clean it today and see if it makes any improvements.

thanks

I.

Hi guys i have a bit of a situation on my hands and need some advice clearing it up! So here goes!!!

I have a 1992 W124 and in dire need of the fuel filter changing i have a new filter and just went to fit it however i have undone the banjo on the front of the filter that was straight forward enough but when i move round to the back of the filter onto the the compression fitting the fitting seems to stay with the fuel line!!!!! is this how it is supposed to be? and if so i have got the wrong filter? or should the compression fitting have stayed with the filter?

any help would be great guys

Kindest regards
Angus
