I recently bought a 1993 220TE (W124) auto estate from a Mercedes Owner Club Member and discovered there is an intermittent problem with the engine.
With gearbox in “P” or “N” the engine starts nearly always first time (hot or cold) and idles at 1000-1100 rpm then gradually dropping down to about 750 rpm idle. Unfortunately and intermittently (usually at least once a day) the revs drop -sometime very quickly, down to 500- 450 rpm, leading to rough idling and engine stalling.
The intermittent problem also occurs when the car is being driven very slowly or when coming to a stop at traffic lights and junctions. The engine runs fine when the car is on the move where the RPM are not in the idle range.
Have carried out the following to remedy the problem without success:
Replaced the Over Voltage Protection relay – has not cured the intermittent fault.
Added Wynn’s Professional formula – Fuel System Cleaner into the petrol tank
Oil service, Maintenance service and 36,000-mile service (new fuel filter)
Could it be the throttle body?
Could it be an intermittent fault with one or both of the fuel pumps?
Any ideas on investigations would be very welcome.
Thank you for your time & I look forward to any replies.
