My 1994 C250D with 132,000 miles lost its power steering pump on Friday. Driving along my ABS light came on, then the ignition light. On opening up the bonnet, the auxhilary belt had came off, and had a nasty nick in it. The recovery man then saw the cracked mounted lugs on the pump casing where it's attached to the main engine casing. On putting his hand on the pump, it literally fell into the engine bay (honestly, without a word of a lie).
Looks like the diesel vibration has forced a crack in the mounting lugs to eventually give up the ghost. Worth checking all your retaing bolts are nice and tight on the unit as a reconditioned one from my local Merc garage is £169 + VAT, plus the cost of a new auxhilary belt and two mounting screws that were also sheared, and new fluid. I'll be fitting it myself.
Perhaps a flaw in aged C Class cars????
