Hi. Brand new to this forum, hope someone can help.
Recently bought a 1994 C220D in lovely condition, low ownership and genuine 89000 miles with service history. Hoped it would last me a few years. It has only one problem it politely refuses to rev above 3000 rpm, which limits the top speed to about 75 mph, and whilst it is reasonably lively accelerating when you first set off it will not rev above 3000 rpm, change gear and it is lively again up to 3000 rpm.
I have had a number of Audi diesels prior to this car and have had the same problem. The problem has always been sorted by changing the air mass meter. Took the car to my local MB technician who after the diagnostic referred me to a local diesel injection specialist. It does have one other symptom, the engine keeps running after you remove the ignition key. This implied to him that something called the ESOS in the pump was faulty and that the remedy was likely to cost in the order of £600.
Can't afford this, I am a charity worker ( I should be driving a Vectra or Mondeo on my wages ) anyone have any ideas? What is an ESOS? Would a replacement pump sourced secondhand fix the problem. I have lived with the problem because it will run all day long as long as I don't want to go over 3000 rpm. Any advise gratefully received.
P.S. Can't remember the fault code from the diagnostic.
