1996 S Class 5th gear

Hello all, just bought my first Mercedes but....

My auto box wont engage 5th gear unless I hold the gear lever to the left, any ideas :-?

spring gone?

adjustment out?

The 5th - 4th (and all the rest) are merely an electrical switch, nothing mechanical. the gearlever should sit in the 5th (or D) posistion, unless pulled over the detent into 4th.

Sounds like a new / replacement gearlever unit / take it apart and see if theres a spring jumped off.
