1996 W124 - ABS and ASR lights on permanently ??

Both ABS and ASR lights on 1996 W124 E320 came on simultaneously and permanently recently - independent MB specialist saying very expensive control unit (£1200) needs replacing - and it's a very rare fault.

Anyone had similar experience? - or cheaper diagnosis!
Thoughts gratefully received...
