Hi all

Done 108K since 97 - up till now, pretty sweet.

Box stuck in 2nd a few weeks back. Drove it to Indy who put it on computer. Could not find anything, plus problem righted itself. However, 3rd to 4th is ropy. Sometimes jumps back to 3rd as if you'd kicked down. Plus, went into neutral briefly for a moment. All this with shift in D.

Main dealer fitted new instrument cluster a few weeks before problem arose, BTW. Indy said computer told him car was set up as if aircon was present, which it hasn't got.

Indy is unwilling to open box - has offered a 99 Class box as a replacement. £400 fitted ! The box has "done 50K miles".

The part on the C Class box is "one digit out" compared to the E Class box.

Question - anyone fitted a C Class box into an E Class ? Are they compatible ? I know £400 is a vg price and I trust the Indy (he's already done some work and spotted main dealer cockups)

Tried MBMK but fcuk all use !!

Thanks for all help.

one digit could be enough to cock it up completely...

1st thing I'd do is an oil and gearbox filter change - make sure they use proper MB oil NOT dextron III - its exbenzive, like 90 quid, but worth it. Make sure they do the torque converter as well.

try george fraser in london - hes the only respected auto box fixer...

if all else fails - try the C class box, 400 fitted is a bargain - mine cost 1200 quid...

Isn't there a problem where fluid or coolant starts leaking onto a circuit that controls the gearbox? Could be that.

Why not have the fault codes read, most of the faults you indicate, relate to a faulty control module, in fact they all do. You should have codes 037-133.
if as you say there are no codes, all the more reason to be module

Intermitent not going into 4 is a known fault, lose connector on ETC module or tranmission, this could also cause other faults, clean contacts and ensure that connector has proper contact.
Cause 2, transmission output speed sensor defective, replace support element
