hi everyone, i have an e300 td est, with 190k miles. on tick over and more so at 1200 rpm i get this loud clattering noise. the camshaft drive chain is ok. it all began when i had the injectors serviced 10k miles back. it has now got louder, i don't think and hope this situation is harming the engine but i would be grateful if anyone has got or had this situation. the indy ( merlin diesels preston ) who did the injectors are redoing them and they feel the problem is the injectors ? i hope it is. does this engin. have the camshaft advance timing ? or centrifugal weights for timing ? can these things create this clattering noise. above the 1200 rpm the engine is smoothe and fairly quiet. the veh. has been well serv. and looked after all its 11 yr life. i am trying to avoid spending money at merlin diesels, who are acting in good faith, and then find the inj. are not the problem. many thanks. herbiemercman.

I would agree that the prob is the injectors. The timing is fixed on your engine, no adjustment.

hi everyone, just spent £220. on new bosche injectors, clattering problem still the same, merlin diesel man who has been a diesel expert and friend of mine for years is completely suprised and baffled. the mystery continues. all i get from this is slightly better spray patterns and improved combustion, circa 3 mpg. as well as eliminating the injectors from the cure search. must try televisionman's ( malcolm ) inde. fran massey. herbiemercman.

Just a shot in the dark but does your engine have a damper on the belt tensioner? I have seen the rubber bushes wear and the damper then makes one hell of a noise but only at low revs. The sound it makes is rather like worn bearings or diesel knock. Jam a screw driver behind it to see if there's any change .

hi smudge, thanks for info. during the recent cold spell i experienced some drive belt squeeling on full steering lock, belt slipping, i applied belt lube and that was that, however i am not sure where the belt tensioner is located but i will find it, may be this could be the problem. ? thanks again. herbiemercman.

Hi Herbie,

Sorry to hear the injectors havnt cured you complaint. I hate to think I have miss guided you.

I took the assumption that the diesel man you took the car to had had a look at it and said the injectors were noisy. This is quite possible if the noise was coming from the top of the engine and sounded like a diesel knock, so agreed with him. I also assumed he would now the difference between diesel knock and another noise from some where eles on the engine.

Where exactly is the clattering coming from? Front of engine, or top.

If the front then a worn tensioner or damper as smudge suggests.

If still the top of engine in injectors area, then you may have a injection pump timing issue. This could be caused by slight timing chain stretch.

HI ELLSY & ROOFLESS, thanks for info. the damper is noisy when cold, sqeezing it stops the noise, always goes off when engine heats up. the hypothocis of the pump timing is very interesting, due to the absense of everything else that has been tried. i can live with this noise my biggest problem is my engine jerking and surging, just like a petrol engine with water in the fuel. engine perfect tick over instant starting in very cold weather and good reving in neutral, when in drive the power output is all over the place, plucking and jerking. herbiemercman.

hi everyone, somone in the mb club once said they had new injectors fitted but it was 2 weeks running before the diesel rattle stopped, i could not understand it, but guess what , after 700 miles my rattle has gone, i contacted merlin diesels to tell them, they were pleased but never had this happen before, they fitted bosch injectors and were upset and suprised the diesel rattle was not resolved, it was a very noisy anoying rattle, i am very satisfied now. don't mind spending money if the problem gets solved, last injectors lasted 11 years and 190,000 miles.herbiemercman.
