My 1997 E280 (straight six) has developed a pretty annoying fault.
From time to time the revs will rise over about 1200rpm and fall under 200rpm to the point where the car stalls. This is particuraly hard on the automatic gearbox when sitting at lights etc as the car tries to lurch forward when in "D"
Normally if the engine is switched off and on, the car will idle perfectly, only for the problem to reappear again.
The fuel quality is OK.
Has anyone any ideas what this fault is? And why it is so intermittent??
Someone suggested to me a reset of the engine management system may be required. The battery failed in the car, and was replaced, the car having sat without a battery for over a week.
Any help or ideas would be really appreciated!
Thanks
Thomas
