Hi all,

I have just had a full service done by my engineer, but he was unable to get his hands on the dipstick for the autobox. I found this thread:

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=413&highlight=C240+dipstick

Is this part still availalbe and can you guys confirm the part number is still the same?

Can someone also confirm the quantity and type of ATF used? I use Dextron 3 in the W124, can I use the same in the C240?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

the 5 speed is the 722,5

I just scanned all the sections for the auto box on the Russian site, and nowhere is the dipstick pictured. To stop me making a horrible purchasing decision, can someone please confirm that the part number for the dipstick is:

Dipstick Part no.W1405891521

Sorry in advance for being a dipstick.......

If you still have the 124 then that has a dip stick, now I see that you do have the 722.6 in you c240 its a late one with no drain plug

The 124 is still on the drive, it is a keeper!

The C240 is our "taxi" and load lugging car. My techie was not going to guess at the required amount of ATF, because as you say, you cannot drain the TC in these boxes. So rather than over or under fill the box, he left it until I could source a dipstick. I'm going to try the Bristol dealer, then the Gloucester one, and finally the Dorchester one. I'll let you know how I get on.....

The E320C is booked in for Feb for a full service too, as it is flaring in 2-3rd changes.... Level is fine BTW.... What is it with the winter that makes these cars sulk?

The TC can be drained.

I will do a "how to" soon.

Have a look at www.baumtools.com for the dipstick.

DON'T use Dextron III.. Use the MB stuff ONLY.

Bristol Merc will not sell the tool and pointed me to www.service-and-parts.net which is feckin useless unless you have a VAT reg company.

I'm going to try Gloucester now and see if they will sell me one....

I wonder where we stand on this point where MB will not sell the stick.

This is against all known laws that have been around a long time.

Who is going to challenge them

Brilliant, thanks very much C55.

Can you just confirm why it has to be MB stuff? I thought the boxes were all basically just hydraulic pumps, fluid was just a medium to cool and pressurise the circuits. If it meets the standard (is there one for MB?) then it should be fine even if it is not MB branded...

Course, I'm dying to be proven wrong here! :)

I did quite a bit of research on this subject, you do not have to use the MB oil (gasp they all say) Shell do a compatible oil as do castrol, however they are more expensive than The MB stuff and more difficult to source (the shell comes in large quantities, and is what my local mb garage uses) (can't remember the type off hand) The reason you need the correct oil is to do with the additives in the oil, which has been developed to work smoothly with the linning materials in the modern gearbox. so don't fit the dexron.
When idid mine i bought 8 litres and changed the filter, i then ran and drained a couple of more times to dilute the torque converter oil so it was nearly all new (really should've done it again) be aware when doing the job of sump bolts seized to the sump clamps, but new clamps and bolts before you start, as you may have to wreck them.

PS be carefull of oils that say they meet MB spec, i nearly made this mistake a .1 is not a .10 etc.

Too late to point you at e-bay - two of us have got them from the same US seller at $19 + P&P (mine was about £15 all in). There are normally quite a few on BIN for more $s, but some are started lower and no-one else bid on mine.

Also from what I've read Sept 99 is the change over to no TC drain (although knowledgeable people here have said otherwise?) so you should have one - mine has one, so probably worth asking them to rotate the TC one full turn to check.

DOH!

Ah well. I'll let Glyn know that the TC should have a drain and ask him to check it out. If the bolts for the pan are seized, then I'm sure he can source them for me. I doubt it on a 34k mile old car though........ ;o)

Thanks all.

Many thanks, will ask Glyn to use the MB stuff then.
