Your engine fan is a visco type that gets to full power at 80c, run the engine up to 80c and see if the fan will slice a carrot, this is always the first test

there is no change in the fan speed or power from cold to 80c.there are two fans on the out side of the rad are they for the air con or engine temp? they
were stuck.when i freed them both fans turned together for a moment but now if i turn the one with the motor on only that one turns on its own. are they connected by a belt?

I've seen the same behaviour in my E300 Diesel, particularly when climbing hills. I don't think 100 C is a problem

The electric fans are controlled by the a/c and are not normally on when the a/c is off

I've heard of people who have replaced the viscous fan with an electronic one. It shouldn't be necessary in truth, if the viscous fan is working correctly.

i think i need to take the thermostat off to have look to see if it's working.i think it's on the bottom water pipe entering the block can anyone confirm that, and can i expect to have trouble refilling the cooling system.

E300 heating up

My '99 E300TD will normally stay solid at just under the 80', but recently during the warmer weather it will rise quite easily to just under 90', but soon settle down once up to speed.

Don't know if this helps, but it's certainly not into the Red, just a bit sensitive.

Just confirming that you must slice the carrot to pass at over 80c

Hi

I was having the same symptoms and changed the viscous fan and all sorted. It was £200 from the dealer but works a treat now, real howl of her when she is warm and fan engaged.
Also the two aux fans i only ever seen them coming on when the aircon is on and yes there is a little belt that links them its about £8 from memory.
The thermostat is behind the hose on the bottom left of the engine(looking from the front) just above the alternator. Early ones dont have a replaceable thermostat and you need to buy the cover and the thermostat.

Any bother let me know.
