1998 SLK230 - Sticking roof closure sequence

When attempting to close the roof the sequence stalls after the boot opens but before the black cover (and flaps) raise which are located behind the seat. The motion stops but the motor driving the system continues to whir. The problem is intermittent, but when I take the car to my local MB dealer, they cannot find anything wrong.
