Hello can anyone give me any ideas on a problem on a Merc A160.
The car is in A1 condition,a lovely little car i bought for my partner, the problem is when you stop ie at traffic lights etc ,with your foot on the brake the car is fighting to creep forward and will try and stall. Besides this the auto box is fine. Any help would be appreciated.

A Class Autos

Hi Yogi,
First of all, welcome to the forum, please don't be put off by the lack of any help in this instance.

In the absence of anything more informed, I think what Matt is referring to is the tendency of some A Class Autos to expensively self-destruct their gear-boxes after relatively small mileages. If you have time, a search in this forum might prove helpful in this regard as problems have been discussed here several times.

Having said that, a tendency to creep is normal for torque-converter transmissions, although it shouldn't cause your engine revs to drop to the point where it begins to stall. If the 'box is an automated manual as opposed to fully auto, the problem might be due to the pump that causes the clutch to disengage during gear changes and at low speeds. This is not a cheap repair, but at least the gearbox doesn't have to come out.

If there is no further help here, I would suggest that if you are still concerned, have it checked out by an 'indy' who knows how the correct operation should be.

All the best,

Ernie

I notice on my car that if I press lightly on the brakes it does that - then if I press a little harder it seems to send a message to the ECU and the "pull" decreases and the idle becomes normal. Just experiment with the brake foot to see if this is the case.

(I once fixed an old lady's 'buggered clutch' by moving her seat forward so she could push the clutch all the way down - she had been told her clutch needed replacing).

Thanks Ernie for the reply.
The car is a full auto with just 41000 miles and a full merc service history.
Its a second car for my partner as she loves the car so i thought i would try and see if this is a common problem before i take it into a repair shop. i have had 2 friends who are mechanics one will be taking it away this week and the other who owns a 500 amg says it sounds like a vac pipe?

Thanks again and any more ideas please advise

Regards Mark:D

Auto Drive Disconnect

Hi Yogi,
Aliddle's response reminded me that on a couple of CVT vehicles I have driven, I was aware of the drive being disconnected as the vehicle came to a halt using the brakes and reconnected as I pressed the accelerator again. In both cases, you could hear the micro-swith operating.

If your car uses a similar system, as suggested by Aliddle, its correct operation might be worth investigating by your guys.

Hopefully somebody who knows more about the A160 system than I do will arrive soon and advise.

Best regards,

Ernie

I think i will take mattkh advice and talk the misses into getting shot of the car. i just read post 215 and i had a dry mouth, seems the A160s are a pile of junk, thought a Merc small car would have been a quality buy.will wait and see what mechanic says later this week. 41000 miles and a merc may need a new box, thats a joke.
i am surprised to read all the negs about the A-class.. Seems im a berk who bought a Merc.
