MB newby with a 1999 C240 with 152,000 miles on the clock. Have just lost the display for the tripmeter and odometer. Both are still recording correct info as in bright daylight you can see the numbers, but they just don't light up.

Does anybody have any ideas? All other dash lights (including other displays - temp display and clock) alll working perfectly.

Tanks for the help, surprised they both (?) have gone though. Any ideas how I go about checking or changing them?

I thought the trip and odo were part of the same display? Trying to remember the dash on the C - can't. I will look at my dad's at the weekend. I would have thought that it's a simple job of pulling the binnacle forward. It may be worth disconnecting the battery first though, as if you disturb the abs light you'll need to visit the dealer for a reset. If you do change the bulb/s I'd recommend changing all of them at the same time. They will have dulled over the years and the results are well worth it.

to remove dash you need 2 hooks to be pushed in on left and right hand side of instrument cluster.when in turn hooks so they face in 2wards instrument cluster, then gently pull hooks out.they should grab the cluster and pull it out.they can be tight.

Thanks for the guidance (sorry it has taken a while to post my response) have found that after a drive down a very bumpy road the missing lights have come back on so not a bulb just a duff connection. Has gone off several times and a swift bash on the top of the binnacle puts them back on so will still have to remove cluster to make sure connection is sound.

Thanks for all your help.

Trip/Odo bulb fault

I am sure there is only one bulb invoved for the joint display, one bulb did it for me on my 1999 CLK and I believe the dashboard is the same.
Despite the success achieved by "bashing the dash" it may still be a blown bulb. When the filament breaks a good thump often causes the two ends to touch and relight, but it will fail again soon, prob at the next bit of traffic calming!
