I have an 1999 E300 td just got out of the car yesterday after driving home. When I went to go out again the key would not activate the ignition. Replaced the batterys but still no luck. The central locking will not work of the key fob or the metal key and there is a red light flashing on the radio. I would buy a new key if this was the problem. But could there be any else wrong . Please help car stuck in driveway.

do you have a spare key you could try.
It could be the key, but equally it could be the EIS (or keyhole to you and I). The keyhole modules do fail, but it's odd that the central locking doesn't work either as it's effectively unlrelated iether at the car or the key end.

similar thing happened to me in Spain recently.Parked my E220 CDI AUTO EST o/s of police station and could not lock car using electronic key.Went home 40 mins away and all ok.Turns out that lots of aerials on roof of police station prevented the electronic key from working.

Just hol it in front of the camera and press the fob button.
