hi guys just joined the site ,i am wondering if any body can help me im feeling a little worried to say the least,i think my timing chain is on its way out ,i will be as breif as possible a day or so ago i started hearing a rattle sound like metal chattering when the engine is at idle speed.if you increase the revs the rattle is less noticible,it apears to be coming from behind the main crank pulley the van has done 100k.can anybody tell me how big of a job this is, and roughly the cost of the chain and tensioner if this is what my problem is.any help would be much appreciated - thank you sg1

It's more likely to be the chain tensioner, they're hydraulic and pump up on oil pressure, when was the oil last changed? to get to the tensioner you will need the R/H front wheel off, with the van in the air look up behind the engine and remove alternator (mark top/bottom it will only go on 1 way!) behind the alternator you will see a large bolt (21mm head) this is the chain tensioner to remove it you will have to remove the bracket that sits above it first. Hope this helps.

cheers thanks for the reply , just so im sure are we saying that the tensioner maybe blocked up or just worn.and is replacing the tensioner likly to cure the problem. or should i do the chain as well . i try to change the oil every 3 months but i must say i havent done for a bit longer than that this time,i think i will give it a good oil change this weekend and see if it clears up or gets a bit better - cheers guys for the help [ sg1 ]

Yes, i think it will be your tensioner that has worn out, this is a common cause on quite a few bike engines, as nearly every bike engine has chain driven cams. I have replaced a few on mine and freinds bikes in the past. The tensioner is basicaly a hydraulic plunger that pushes against a plasic slipper to tension the chain. Try the oil change by all means, but i think you will end up changing the tensioner. good luck.

could also be ya alternator clutch,,or the pulley guide wheel.....or maybe even a loose bolt on ya fan belt tensioner.

wouldnt go stripping any thing out yet

do a search,,,,,vito fanbelt,,,,i had sounds like that and today i noticed a had a loose bolt on the fanbelt tensioner

also my guide wheel was suffering from dry bearings,

wd-40 then coppa grease

very helpful doods on ere matey

take the plate off the bottom of the inner wing drivers side and the wheel,,,,start the van and listen

turn off and check wheels for play

good luck:D

My vito makes a chattering noise from that area when started first thing in the morning. Got it checked out turned out. Was told it was more likely to be on the alternator belt as the timing chain would make one hell of a racket.

The timing chain and tensioner should last whey longer than 100k .The noise your hearing is most likely the poly belt tensioner pulley bearing .Pull off the belt and run engine for a few minutes to see if the noise dissapears if it does then then its definetley the poly belt tensioner pulley bearing . Relatively cheap and easy to replace not really worth fiddling about with lubricant as it wont last long as the damage is allready done. Another thing worth considering is the water pump bearing as this is driven by the belt as well (can you get any movement on the pulley ie. in/out if so then the water pump is on it's way out cost around £120 for an MB replacement , pattern parts are around £75.
