our 51 reg c220 cdi ran for approx 40k miles on 100% biodiesel, made from WVO (a friend makes it via his cooking oil company) and we had NO problems whatsoever.

Oddly enough it's not something i've ever seen in a car ad though, i'd be very interested to see how the sale progresses when it happens.

That's mainly because the cars that are best on veg oil and used by an experienced veg oil person tend to change hands amongst those who use the stuff. There's no point advertising it on Ebay and getting silly offers when there are knowledgeable people on the right forums who know which cars to look for.

I run waste veg in my 1990 300d.

This usually costs me 10p a liter or I sometimes buy cleaner oil ie Ebay for circa 50p ish.

I rough filter any muck out and it then gets mixed with 10% petrol and gets left for a month, after a month all the crap is at the bottom and the top 90% is drawn off and filtered to one micron and added to the tank.

The car has 20% diesel added or thereabouts ,why ? well because I have not altered the timing to allow it to run 100% veg so at around 90% veg there is some incomplete combustion going on (a grease cloud out of the exhaust).

I will be making bio in the colder winter months as it is easier on the engine as I do a lot of short trips.

There is a bit of a power loss with 80% veg and the 20% diesel, now there is a product called 2 EHN or veggieboost which addresses this problem.

New veg oil from Tesco mixed with 10% petrol will sit in your freezer all night and still be liquid in the morning, and various batches of my own oil I have tested (used oil) are still mostly liquid but not as good as new oil.

My engine suffers no detriment,I have run plenty of diesels on veg and bio and mixes of both but there is nothing out there that compares to these old Merc engines for veg use.

Now what exits the tailpipe can stink a bit bit but I dont care a tuppence ,I never get any tailgaters (well only for around 20 seconds max).
I often find in heavy traffic that the car behind will leave a good gap and recently outside Cambridge on the A1 the following two lanes left a 50 yard gap.
Belting along at the legal limit and then have to slow for stationary traffic see's a least a minute of clean air before the cloud washes over the cars and you sit there watching people wondering what it is.

I do around 4 to 600 miles a week and have long given up working out what I save but it is a lot,all I worry about is keeping the tank full so I do not have to put diesel in if I get caught short.

Running veg is all about preventative maintenance, but if like me you are driving a 21 year old car then you take and hour or so once a week to check everything over and replace any suspect parts etc.

Hi Doug,

I run 100% Veg all year round in my W123 Diesel (use a small heater to help it in December and January) but give out the grease cloud you mentioned.

I have heard of this timing adjustment you mentioned to improve running.

Do you advance or retard the timing? And how many degrees do you suggest?

Many thanks fellow Veg lover.

Car point blank refused to start before, drained the battery trying to start it. Friend had to come with jump leads, 2nd attempt it started, very strange!

Oh dear, you've only gone and done it now, it'll be that comedy fuel you put in.

i think the veg has started to "clean" the intank strainer and maybe of created a vaccum to pull fuel back to tank.... or one or more seals may have gone causing air to get in.

I know you only put in a small amount of veg oil but it will start cleaning the tank straight away, and if the seals were almost finished anyay, then the veg oil could of easily finished them off.

i'd get the lot replaced and the tank strainer checked. also prepare to change the fuel filter.

thanks

derek

Or its blocked the fuel filter?? Ive not had any problems with my 250 but I make proper bio fuel, not SVO. I have had to change a fuel filter and pre filter though.

I think you'll find that even 'proper' bio has the same detergent properties as it's still mostly veg oil.

My Peugeot 405 has a Bosch diesel pump and runs happily on SVO. Interestingly I was finding fuel filters were having to be replaced more often before I stared using it. They run at €4 each and can be changed in a few minutes so I keep a spare in the car all the time. Oil and filter changes are per book, at 6,000 miles. Fuel filters now last about 6,000 miles. A mix of maybe 20-40% diesel seems to work well.
