Well I'm now the proud owner of my first Merc, a 1989 300E auto - so far godd & bad...

The good - love it already, so comfy, what an engine & so refined for a car of it's age.

The bad -
1, Odometer not working, well it shows speed but not clocking up mileage (so that 80000k on the clock may not be the true mileage)
2, When headlights are on the dashboard isn't lighting up (checked fuse & it's fine)
3, Outside temp gauge not working...just blank
4, this is the potential ...oh SH!T... the ASD light is on & not going out .., niave of me I know the guy said it was the brake pad warning light playing up & that it had new pads so must be the sensor, saw new pads so thought ok!.

Was supposed to be heading from Leeds to Birmingham in it tomorrow but I guess it's not a good idea with that light on!

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're right. It may not be...

That'll be the dimmer for the panel lights. They go intermittent. Just wind the dimmer (it's one of the two stalks sticking out of the binnacle) back & forth to clean the pot and the lights should spring back into life

Pretty standard on older cars. And sometime it's blank because it's not fitted...

ASD is an electrohydraulic system and it's probably a dealer-only thing to fix. It probably fails safe (ie, disengaged) and, if so, could safely be left not working. But you should take expert advice as whether or not that is the case

Cheers Nick, I'll try the lights thing in the morning.

I read on one of the other threads that if i remove the ASD relay for a few seconds & then replace it, if the light stays off then there's nothing to worry about but if it stays on then it's a trip to a MB specialist

ASD - Anti slip differential??? By the way there is a good place in Birmingham called mercedesservicing.com or something like that. They do fixed price repairs and could sort your ASD prob out.

Then there's two large ...urm ..relays??? ...am I looking for something that diesn't exist?

Cheers Malcolm, I have to say as a newbie to Merc's & this forum, there really is a great bunch of people on here. :D

Really friendly & very helpful.

I've been scanning through the previous forums & there is just so much knowledge (and humour) it's great.

its Item 101 that is at the rear of the big fuse relay box in front of the steering wheel, if you look on the diagram you will see your distributor cap in the fient drawing.
