My first post, so have mercy on me. I probably shouldn't be here, but my other half has an SL, so here goes. I have the M-B 2.7 Diesel engine and autobox in my 11/03 G/Cherokee (yes, I know, my fault for buying it).
This fault appeared with no warning: start car, noticed that the little lights that illuminate the P,R,N,D adjacent to the gear selector did not illuminate; selected reverse, car reversed; selected D, car went nowhere, but engine revved.
Main Dealer dropped the sump, said the fluid was 'sludgy', refilled it, still the same, said new gearbox required, £7000 fitted thank you very much; I declined their kind offer. Car now with Auto specialist in Fareham who says gearbox ok, it's an electrical problem. Trouble is, he can't trace it.
Has anybody ever come across something similar??
At the moment, I feel like giving it away and going back to my trusty (and reliable) SEC.
Thanks in anticipation.

PS I'm here as there appear to be no Jeep forums in the UK with the level of expertise that you guys have.

I don't know if these numbers will identify the gearbox adequately, but it seems that there are 3 numbers on the casing:
7222700100
7226790
4754671

Please let me know if that's not sufficient and I'll investigate further.

Does it have a display on the dash showing selected gear?

So it's a 722.6 box, so pretty familiar.

It does sound like an electrical fault so could be oil being passed up the loom from the gearbox, the gearbox ECU not passing power to the selector, or the selector itself.

I'd start at the selector checking for power into it. Sorry, not got the pin outs but it shouldn't be too difficult to suss them.

Is the selector a Tip shift or a regular Auto type?
