Help! The gearbox on this Musso I've bought seems to have a fault and I could do with some information on exactly which engine and 'box are fitted.
It's a 1996 Ssangyong Musso GSE Diesel with the manual box, allegedly a Mercedes component, and I wondered if anyone knew of the original fitment of the gearbox. The 2.9 engine designation I do not know, but I read somewhere that it is the one fitted to the Mercedes vans, so could the box be a commercial fitment too? Will the petrol engined model have the same gearbox?
ANY information on the engine and drivetrain would be of great assistance, and any tips on who to speak to for professional help would be great!

Your Mercedes
BMW 525 Diesel Touring
Ssangyong Musso

Ssangyong imports are now handled by a new company in the UK (KIA?) A Google search will find this out

Call the new importers with the chassis (VIN) number of the car and ask for a gearbox & engine part number. Check the engine number against the V5 to see if it matches

Then call the local Merc dealer and ask them what cars that gearbox was fitted to. The try calling breakers for that model of Merc / gearbox number

Good luck!

Thanks Nick, I've just cancelled the purchase of the Musso in favour of one without any current gearbox problems!
I have however bought another one, a 1995 2.9 SE model, with 115,000 miles on the clock with a good service history.
It'll be here on Tuesday and I'll do as you suggest.

I assume that the Mercedes engine will be as per the standard Mercedes specification as fitted to one of the early saloons, with the gearbox fitted with the mods to take the transfer box.
Which model of Mercedes it will be I'm not sure. I'll have a trawl through the Internet sites and see which had the 2.9 diesel fitted.
I intend to add a vegetable oil conversion, similar to those supplied by Elsbett or ATG, but with my own modifications to run a two tank system on heated oil, hence choosing a good relaible engine, the Mercedes.
If I could afford a G-Wagon I'd have had one!

Any Ssangyong Musso owners or vegoil burners out there?
