Well, yesterday I picked up car number 2 in my personal modern day golden triangle of MB's.

I bought a late 1992 CE230. I already own a 1989 190E (might replace that one with a better lower mileage 1993/4 model).

So, I just need a 1997 SL500 and I'm set!

I live in Norway so these babies cost a lotta cash. The CE 230 was £ 6.000.

A decent 1997 SL 500 will be around £ 30.000.

But, I know I'll might have to buy a common rail II diesel MB soon to save on fuel costs and mileage on the other cars.

Problem is, all the cars I have bought are originally from Germany and my German isn't what it used to be, so does anyone have an Owners manual for a 1992 CE 230 or 1989 190E they could scan or copy or know where I could buy one?

I have tried to find out what the EC button is for (I know it's the A/C and that it is off when the red light is on), because some say it switches the A/C on and off and some say it's an economy button. I have no idea!

Also, the automatic seat belt ejector doesn't work on the passenger side, any ideas? Much appreciated.

Gotta laugh, both MB's I have screamed like mad when braking, I think it's due to non manufacturer brake pads. Anyway, I fixed the 190E's brakes (at no small cost). And both MB's had bust bonnet pull thingamebobs, even in Norway the replacement part for the 190E was only (I say only) £ 6. ****, a pint beer costs £ 8 here.

Anyway, you'll be hearing from me....I'm sure.

Stay frosty!

I am fascinated why old Mercedes cost so much in Norway. Why can't you buy secondhand in Europe or in UK where cars of that age go for a song?

We have a sadistic government that takes great pleasure in taking as much money from us as possible.

If I buy a 1997 SL500, I can get a beauty for 20.000 euros which is roughly £ 13500.

The Norwegian Taxation on that car is as follows:

VAT £ 4500 (25%) to be paid when you drive it into the country.

PLUS

Nett Weight Tax £ 11.700
Horsepower Tax £ 26.000
CO2 £ 19.000

Total £ 57.000

Minus £ 38.200 in depreciation tax (10 years old)

Plus Scrap tax £ 100

Total Tax to be paid to get Norwegian plates including original purchase price in Germany =

£ 36.200

Naughty bastards eh?

Is the Norwegian government stark raving mad? Why should motorists pay all that? Why on earth has there not been a revolt? Why are they voted out? In the UK we would bring the govt down.

Well, they are a quality car.

They are VERY popular in Norway and they don't depreciate much (especially CE's /SL's etc).

That said, I only really like the old ones, they have character (some of the new ones are the DB's don't get me wrong, I've driven many of them).

I'm still trying to find out when MB quality hit the floor, I know it's almost back to the same level now, but from around 1994 to 2002 (maybe later) they really skimmed the profits and let quality slide. Hell, they even admitted it themselves.

The 190 E's from 1985 - 1994-ish were so good you still have to take them out into the woods and shoot them to get rid of them. I saw one in Oslo this week with 450K kms (280K miles) on and it looked like it was showroom new!

Hehehe Norway hasn't had a majority government since God knows when, it's all you scratch my back... Anyway...

Good example for new cars

Know someone who has a new CLS 320 CDI £ 43,500 basic UK.

Basic in Norway is £ 37,150, with registration tax £ 75,500.

The only other crazy country (as far as I know is....) DENMARK....

Basic incl VAT in Denmark is £ 40,500, with Registration tax it's £ 110,365!

You are correct in saying that Denmark is the other expensive country, Ireland comes third.

When I lived in Sweden I used to watch the Norsk folk coming over the border at Strömstad to do their shopping in Sweden, I have been in Norway 10 times , well that is to stand the other side of the line on the border.

your right its the a/c on and off button , mine has the same due to being an import , its worse trying to dispher the cruise control stick lol my german aint too good :p

Also, the automatic seat belt ejector doesn't work on the passenger side, any ideas? Much appreciated.

id start with the switch on the door , thats what tells it to come out , remove the switch and test it before you have to check the motor itself.
