Hi all

New to this forum, so please excuse the stupid questions if already asked 100 times, have had a search but did not find the answers

1st problem with my new c220 is black smoke literally pouring out the exhaust on cold start and on acceleration, I mean it makes it look like a 30 year old banger! I can't get any response from the dealer in CDS, they look at me like, yeah its diesel, so what?! But, something is wrong, I know.....

The 2nd is the bluetooth handsfree phone system mercedes have supplied from the factory, the dealer tells me they can not change the ring tone but honestly its dangerous, its like a cat being strangled at high pitch, when you are driving at speed with the music on loud, it makes you jump out of your seat! Can it be changed? Does anyone know?

Hoping someone can help me......??!!

Apart from the above, very pleased with the car, so glad I waited for the new model :D

Thanks

Hi,

Did you resolve the issue with the excessive smoke from your exhaust? I've questioned the same problem with a dealer in Portsmouth, they just say it's to be expected with a diesel, funny thing is I haven't noticed it with other cars in the same class i.e. bmw, audi. I believe the only way to get round it is to have a diesel particulate filter fitted??

Thanks

Hi & Welcome.

Is your 220cdi engine modified in anyway. Chipped, tuning box, remap. If it is it could be potentially overfueling if you experience this on hard acceleration. If not then I am lost.

This is so strange. In my previous C320 Cdi I never had any black smoke whatsoever coming out at neither startup nor any acceleration of any kind.

Not before nor after chipping it.

Wife even drove behind me to check.

Perhaps something to do with my journey's only being on fast A and motorways?

A good fast journey may solve this???

As a note , I saw an E220 Cdi "08" plate today which did exactly the same thing. Loads of smoke!

Seen some ML320 Cdi's who have done this.

I Pressume when warm you have worked the engine hard and worked at high revs through the gears. With diesel when the gears have been changed up early unburnt diesel particles can remain. I find every now and then once you work the engine hard these bits burn off ie the black cloud but then it's clean after that.
Give it a good thrash and that should clear it out.

I have an E220cdi and no problems with smoke nor have I had with any MB diesels. I would book it in for a proper check.

Like st4 said, Normally the cause of black smoke whilst accelerating is over fueling, as the engine is running on a rich mixture, this is perfectly normal.

If black smoke occurs whilst under other operating conditions such as cruising or on engine idling, again the engine is running on a rich mixture. However this isn't normal! the problem normally lies with the induction of air. maybe a blocked air filter or faulty air sensors. These both would give the engine incorrect fuel ratios, causing black smoke.

Perhaps this car is fitted with Particulate Filter. When clogged up, the only "proper" way cleaning them would be a blast down the motorways...

Go for a "Blast" this may clear it out ....

EGR valve may also be a possibility (stuck)

A Remap would not cause excess smoke (if done properly)

Smoke screen

After a while cruising at 2,000 or so rpm, a burst of acceleration will evoke a bit of smoke from most diesel engines - temporarily.

If smoking is a feature every time you accelerate, it probably indicates an incorrect mixture. Might be worth a diagnostic check before plod invites you to get it done?

Hello guys,
did anyone of you guys found the problem for the smoke you have mentioned?
I have the same problem and they told me that it could be a faulty turbo pressure or the 4 parts that spray the diesel inside the cylinders.

Excessive boost pressure would make it better due to having more air coming out the rear !

As for the injectors this still could be a problem .

I assume you had that fixed under guarantee?
