All,

Wondering if anyone can shed any light on this intermittent fault which seems to be happening more frequently. I have a 97 SL320. BAS/ASR and ABS orange warning lights sometimes come on when I am driving the car. Its annoying as I cannot use the cruise when this happens. The two orange lights come on similtaneously, sometimes within minutes of starting a journey or it could take much longer for this to happen. I cannot see anything in the handbook which refers to both these lights coming on together, so I am wondering if this is some sort of fault code or is it just an electrical gremelin that i'll never get to the bottom off?

Anyway its really annoying!

Can anyone help?

Kenny

Sounds like the old favorite the brake light switch. Pls have a search on the forum as it has come up quite a few times.

Not sure on a 129.063 car, and I cant recall one doing this. the system does take info from the stop switch but the fault is not listed as on the other cars.

A big cause on this car could be a voltage dip just after starting, and the thing to do here first is to check the running voltage on the car, and that should be 13.8 volt min.

There are also to fault code listings for this. do the voltage check first and come back

Hi Kenny:

This just happened to me last night. 2000 W210 E320 with 70,000 miles.
While driving, both warning lamps came on along with a malfunction indication. Told me to visit the dealer ASAP.

Clue #1, it happened while in stop-and-go traffic.

I drove home, drove off this morning and the warnings were gone.

I have been sorting out the likely failure items, MAF, crank sensor, etc. in an attempt to address the common failures before one strands me on the road.
The brake switch was on my list.

It just gained the priority slot for next week!

Form what I have read, this quick repair should correct the problem.

Good Luck,
Ron

if you lost cruise control too.
brake light switch is my guess.

.....yes i do realise it's tricky to use cruise control in stop start traffic!!
don't do that...it'll all go horribly wrong.

The brake light switch is the culprit on many cars but not the 129.

The brake light switch is in two parts, one for the lamp, and the 2nd section, this pressure part goes down killing the speed signal, without a speed signal the cruise control cannot work and it could well be the cause, no guarantee though on this part.

The switch cost under £10 and is easy to fit, 1 17mm nut in most cases.

There are other things on the 129 that I will go into later

Hi all,

Sorry to take so long to get back.

Malcolm, Have checked the voltage with the engine started and its sitting at 13.93V. Before that out of curiosity I checked the voltage before the car was stated and it had been sitting overnight. It was 12.37V

Fault is still happening and I probably could live with it, however if there is a way of making it go away, I am up for a go!!!

Good for doing that and it all looks good there, OK this is all ties up with the speed signal and I need a little thinking time, jog me if I do not come back
