Recently bought my first Merc - a 2000 W129 SL280 - and I was just wondering what the W/S on the automatic gearbox means?

W is a second gear start, and S is a first gear start,and the changing points are slightly different and higher

I had the 320, nice cars

that's what i was thinking it was after having a discussion with a taxi drive about it on Saturday night as i noticed he had it on his E-Class. He mentioned heavy wet conditions.
