Hi, I am looking to buy a 2001 230 SLK tip, it has done 103,000 miles, can any one advise me what to be looking out for before I part with any pennies:D
Any advice would be much appreciated as this would be my first MB purchase.
Many thanks
Lisa

Hi Lisa and welcome to the forum, buying a 2001 car it will have most updates done on it. Just be sure that everything works, and that includes the top going up and down, the air con. find a bumpy road and listen for any clonks from the suspension. Sometimes its better to be a passenger when purchasing a car as you can sit back and listen for clonk and squeaks
Are you buying from a dealer or private

Hi Malcolm, thanks for your quick response.
The car is from a dealer (not MB though) one issue was the mileage (is this high in MB standards) it ran really quiet, no odd squeeks or clonks, hubby sat in passenger seat checking out noises and buttons! lol also the engine management light came on when we got back to the garage, the guy said it was probably the air intake sensor where it had been standing about, he will get it sorted.........but should I be worried?

If the light came on, I would pass on that car, this could be the camshaft seal that is leaking oil into the wiring harness,if this does not get fixed by the book, it will cause further aggro and problems later, and could be why the last owner sold the car.

It is a high mileage for that year, If I were you I would look to see what the MB dealers have to offer, and at least it will come with a full good 12 months warantee, and that is worth a lot.
Also MB dealers do not sell cars with that high mileage.

Prices are on the floor for the time being, and a good time to buy

Mercs of that era were not the best the company has put together and are prone to rust especially around the rear boot release as due to its poor design, the paint around the handle got stressed due the pressure being put on the paint by opening and closing the boot/hatch.
The SLK is a lovely car and my girlfriend had 2001 200k. Also check the seats move as her passanger one was broken and an ovious one make sure the roof works, i say obvious because i remember her telling me that she had bought the SLK and i asked if she had tried the roof and suprise suprise she forgot.

Of you and the car please
Pics will be posted once I get it home (and worked out how!)
Am I able to put an avatar pic up yet or do I have to have a certain amount of posts first?

You may need 30 post, if you do, just join in any where and you will get the points, not Benz bin or motoring related.

Try and do one now,you can always take it away

Yellow, will full black leather interior :D

That is an excellent choice and very few around with that colour, they stay clean, and it brings back some of the colours that we had on sports cars some years back.

I slept in my SL the first night that I got it home

Hi Lisa Jayne. Welcome to the forum. Malcolm is not the only smoothy around! - although he rarely borrows my comb.

Let me help with your points aggregation. You say low mileage. How low is low?

Another issue which has exercised us recently is low profile tryes on larger rims, fitted as an option. Is that something your car has?

Hey thanks for the welcome

No, I think it sits on standard 16" rims (from what I remember)........for the time being! ;)

It has done just under 70,000, which I consider low for a 10 year old
