I recently got another one of the aforementioned vehicles having lost my previous one in an accident :-(

This one takes for ever to heat up and won't hold it's temperature, I therefore fully suspect the thermostat.

Now I've had a little look and it seems I will need to pull out the entire housing, as it all looks a little crowded in there, has anyone done this before.. am I going to open a can of worms? are there any tricks?

Derek

(I've checked the DIY board and run a search but didn't turn anything up)

Thanks... it's good to be back... in a merc.. had a fiat hire car for a while.. awful awful awful.

anyway

The engine slowly gets to 60 then stays there until I get get to a faster bit of road. Right now I've got some very hard foam blocking off the grille under the bumper and a piece of plastic behind the top grille reducing that to 50% so overall it's on about 25% area and just about gets to 80C at 50mph, 82C at 70, stays at 70C at 40mph. The old car heated up quicker and held its temperature much more 'securely' To me it feels like the thermostat simply doesn't close properly.

I do almost exclusively extra urban driving.

The pipe from the engine to the radiator gets hot when the engine is at 60C.. I think this is the clincher.

Is the valve you mentioned the 'thermostat', I'm trying to 'see' it under the bonnet in my minds eye.

No the one in the first link is the heater valve, someone else should come on and say where the engine thermostat is hiding
