Hi there, Up until recently I was a very satisfied owner of a 2002 C220 CDI Estate. Totally problem free until 6 weeks ago when it had its 60K service at MB garage. £400 later and it had to go back to sort out a knocking from the steering, apparently a cable not tied back after service. All OK for several days then it started to develop a starting problem. Taking longer to start each time over a 2 week or so period. Sometimes starting 1st time tho'
If you held the key rather than let the cycle reset at each attempt it would start after several seconds. Back to MB garage where they diagnosed a faulty No 2 injector. Work carried out and £400 or so later got car back.
All ok for about 100 miles then same problem, becoming harder to start but just as often would start 1st time. No difference whether engine was warm or cold.
Back to MB and after a £95 diagnosis fault put down to faulty No3 injector. I felt I was being "had over" as it had just had work carried out and I felt that perhaps the finding was incorrect or misdiagnosed previously.
I put some injector cleaner in the tank and that seemed to make starting easier over the next few days. Then today after a 30 mile trip I had to switch off for about 20 mins. On return the car would not start.
It turned over no problem. Plug light came on and off as normal but engine would not fire even if held for 15 seconds. Called for help etc and when I went back to the car about 30 mins later it started 1st time. I drove it another 30 miles.Parked and when I returned 5 mins later it would not start. Left for 1 hour and started 1st time. Throughout all this period of having starting problems when the car does start it runs and ticks over like a dream. No loss of power or increase in fuel consumption. At no time have any of the engine management lights ever come on. I'm not sure if pure coincidence but I am sure I can detect a slight smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin even when windows closed. Is it worth having No 3 injector replaced too? Does that sound far fetched to have 1 injector fail followed by another 100 miles later? Any help would be very much appreciated. I am based near Stansted so perhaps if anyone knows where I can get a second opinion locally it would be appreciated. Sorry for the long winded post but hopefully this will make it easier for someone in the know to help. Best wishes...Riker

Hello and welcome, I think that you are being had, injectors do not fail like that. if it was an injector it would always start but would be missing, the is the second post in 7 days that injectors have been replaced when they should not have been

Normally they are sent away and re set at a fraction of the price of new injectors. You should have got the old ones back, they were yours.

In the morning you should get some advice on where to go.

Air in the fuel lines? Normally it is the older diesels that have a problem with the run back tubes from the injectors letting air in. However if it is turning over ok then the next step is fueling.

Blobcat, you do have an ECU that opens the injectors on a common rail.

On a previous common rail every two years the run back tubes would fail. When that happens it is supposedly hard/impossible to start after leaving the car overnight. I would find that it would start first thing then not restart. The hoses looked ok but when you took them apart they would be perished.

Cylinder compression problems? Seems to ring a bell when engine is still warm.

I have had run back problems on a common rail diesel.

On the top of the fuel filter there is a black valve with two pipes attached, in/out held in by two torx screws. Quite often this is damaged, when the fuel filter is changed, seal or non return valve, never realy investigated as they are only coppers to buy. This allows drain back and excessive cranking on start up as it has to fill pipes/filter. I 'THINK' this is the correct part number but check with your dealer; 611 078 02 49.
Hope it helps.
