As some of you know my wife and I bought a 03 A160 manual, Wife complained that the fuel economy or mileage to a tank full was roughly the same as her 230 SLK, Ive worked it out the A160 is doing about 30MPG.

Also for a 1.6 petrol engine I would have thought it would be quite nippy for its engine size and weight but it isnt, from standstill it feels sluggish and just to get from 0-30 isnt that impressive.

Question from any other owners, would you say your 160 is the same ???

I will check the air filter and make sure there aren't any binding brakes etc, might even give it an oil anf ilter change also, but I think it slow.

I have to say that our 160 is not a road rocket. at the start of the local double carriageway known as the mad mile where in my old BMW 318 I used to floor the pedal and blast off in a cloud of dust all that happens in the 160 is a mild perambulation that would not spill grannies G & T . You should however be getting a combined in the region of 40 despite trying to get it to stir itself

They are slow. I would not expect performance from any a-class even the 210 special. They are not built for it.

Hello,

We have a A210 Evo and although it has a 2.1 engine its only 140 bhp, however my wife can get 40mpg regularly. As for quick, no its not 'quick' but certainly goes ok for a small bus. In the wet its a little hectic if you want to goooo from a junction.

We bought it with a little on on the way her mx5 was not going to do, it has loads of room, is comfy, looks nice and is rare.

Cheers

jib,

The onnly way to be sure it's not underperforming is to do a 0-60 against the clock and compare it to the Autocar figures.

If it's roughly the same, that's as good as it gets and you'l probably have to live with it, but if not, there could be all sorts of things wrong.. At least you'll know there's an improvement to come.

The testers do their 0-60 runs by revving up to the point of maximum power (say 5000 revs) and side-stepping the clutch.....If you're not prepared to do this, your time will be slower....perhaps much slower..

I dont think dropping the clutch at 5000 RPM is a good idea, I dont mind trying it someone elses car but not mine anyway.
I dont think there is anything wrong with it its just slow for a 1.6. I might experiment with a K&N filter to see if that helps.
The mileage is still low 36k so it might loosen up a little by the time it gets to 50k, will also do an oil change with some quality oil in the next few weeks.
