sorry to confuse, CAN BUS, two wires which use binary to talk to each other, every control unit has to be in contact via the EIS, ign switch, what i was trying to say was that the main control boxes on you car which are linked on the can bus are no longer talking to each other, hence you need a short test to see where the fault has happened, its even worse when your trying to trace fault !!!!!

What is a CAN well its not the kan kan

Our cars have ECU's that need to talk to each other, one says im OK and on to the next one, its a form of networking called a CAN and it consist of 2 data lines one high sped and one low speed.

A SAM is a ECU that take information from other ECU's in the car and each SAM has its own network. So you say have 6 items connected, the CAN is done by a pair of twisted wires terminated by 2 x 120 Ω resistors, this gives a reading of 60Ω

lets take an audio one you have the

main head unit
CD player
Bose amp
telephone
TV
So these 5 items are connected in one circuit and all of the CAN connectors are in one ring
So you have a fault in the CD. Plugging into STAR it can see what unit has failed as no information from the CAN has come up. In some cases an ECU with a problem can take the whole CAN network down with it, in this case it would say "cannot communicate with Comand" so you just unplug the CAN plug from each item in the ring until it does.
A simple Ω meter will do.

I know as clear as mud :confused:

If you have just bought the car would you not be better going back to the seller? Assuming it was purchased from a garage they should fix under warranty?

i had bough the car knowing of these problems was hopin that it was gonna be a simple fix, but obvisouly i was over optimistic, just wanted to say thanks for everyones feedback, i suppose i'll just have to take it to an auto electircian or a garage!!!

Sorry if I sounded abrupt  It wasn't my intention. But you do have a bit of a list. Not for the novice DIY'er :|
