Hello...

I’m having problems with my merc again, new one this time tho.. came home from work Saturday and all was fine.. not moved car since, went out this morning and it won’t start, just over but will not fire up at all..

Check a few things from google searching, the Rev counter don’t move at all during cranking (one site said it should), no air in the clear fuel lines, has diesel in..... nothing will work..

Any ideas? I need to get to work in the morning so need to get running ASAP..

Thanks In advance

Thanks for the replies, ended up calling the AA... turns out a gallon of diesel sorted the problem out...

Had 2 bars on the gauge so never even crossed my mind that could be the problem

Was it parked on a slope facing nose up? Only ever happened to me once so it might just be chance but I've avoided parking facing up hill and letting it drop below 1/4 tank ever since.

Other thing is some models have saddle tanks that straddle the prop shaft and sometimes they don't equalise so one can empty.

It was parked absolutely flat, never been a problem, I’ve ran it right down with fuel light on before and it’s always started no problem.. I will definitely not make that mistake again, but thankfully is wasn’t anything serious

I’ll not be letting it run down that low again, have just filled it to the top so all should be well now.. there’s a fuel station 100 yards from my house aswell, had I thought it could be that, I’d have walked on for some but as you say, nearly 1/4 tank, kinda ruled that out

It might be a good way forward, when you have time and money, to have the fuel senders looked at, so that they show the correct reading. But as you now know there is an issue etc etc etc

What made the AA guy think a bit of fuel might sort it?

The early C class had a saddle tank if memory serves.
The fuel should pump from one side to t'other, if it doesn't when you get down to about 1/4 full it's like you ran out of fuel.

Sounds about right for your issue.

It’s done it again today, but with just over half tank of diesel in and parked perfectly level

Pump not starting the give up?

It was fine till last week, then the AA put a gallon of diesel in and it started, but today it’s done it again but with over half a tank in...

It’s turning over fine just won’t fire..

Could the battery be an issue? Cos other than put diesel in, the only other thing he did different was connect it up to a jump pack..

Even though it’s turning over as normal

Is this just a cold start issue? That is difficult to start in the morning but ok after.
Have you replaced your fuel line 'o' rings yet?

It’s happened twice now and both times from cold yea..

No I’ve not replaced them.. where are they located? I’ve not noticed any air or leaking fuel anywhere in or around the lines..

Just made me wonder about the battery as when he put the fuel in and put a jump pack on it started fine... I’ll have to try use a jump pack in the yard when I get back on Saturday..

Things to check:

- Battery should be 12.6V or as near as certainly not as low as 12.2V
- Glowplug light should be out before starting
- Have the LP plastic fuel lines been changed in the last 10 years? If not the o ring seals will leak air in especially when left overnight, most of us running that era of MB have suffered this including me
- When was the fuel filter last changed and was it OEM

Great thanks... I will check all those things..

I always wait till glowplug light is out, so that’s not an issue..

I’m leaning towards the battery but I will check it at the weekend, I’m away now till saturday

You'll find 6 or 7 'o' rings at the ends of the fuel lines.
Do some research here as a pre warm of the engine bay can save you breaking brittle plastic when cold.
The fuel filter 'o' ring is the 1st to suspect in my experience. That's on the line from the centre of the filter. In the short term lift some, wrap ptfe around a few times, push back down. you might be ok with that.
