I'm new here and firstly apologise that my first post is a question...I have never owned a MB before ..but in 6 months have been lucky enough to buy 2 ....one runs fantastic and the other one has got me against the wall.....thats the one I want to talk about its a 2003 W211 E200K with a lot of electrical problems,

The tail lights are all over the place ....no tail light on LHS, dim on the RHS, no reverse lights at all, one dim number plate light.

When I put the indicators on, one of the license plate lights start flashing and one of the interior trunk lights too....as well as the right hand tail light.

Indicators sort of work but not fully...only one of the 2 indicator lamps light up. Have checked both lamp units all OK when I check the bulbs individually.

The reverse lamps do not come on at all.

When the lights are switched on...one of the RHS tail light comes on very dim..the voltage is 4.3V...the LHS is completely dead.

If I disconnect the LHS taillight completely...the interior LHS trunk light goes dim.

If I open the trunk the LHS number plate light..which is already dim goes off...and comes back on again once the the trunk is closed.

The brake lights work fine....so am only driving it during the day !

The trunk switch does not work with switch or remote....tried looking for a bad earth in the trunk area...no go...cleaned all existing ones.

And to top it all off...the rear head rests don't go down when I press the button on the centre console.

I have had it star diagnosed...came up with a lot of errors...all cleared out..I have the print out.. (probably due to the battery completely dying and foolishly connecting the battery the wrong way).

Going through the posts on this forum and others they seem to be pointing to the Rear Sam ... although looking at it you could swear its an earthing problem (have cleaned and checked earthing point in the LHS of the boot area near the sam unit and also the battery earth from the earth wire to the box voltage doobery to the body).

...any help or suggestion would be appreciated.

This does look to be a rear SAM problem, joining the battery up the wrong way could mean instant death for it

I've got one on order...the funny thing is the STAR/DAS Diags never really came up with anything significant to suggest its the rear sam...the fault codes it did come out with were erased...apart from the AGW which was current and remained ....later saw the fuse was blown...phew

Once you have the SAM, if there are still troubles we can go through it

If your battery was reverse connected for more than a split second expect the rectifier in the alternator to pack up real soon. This is not an easy change job, the diodes (9 off them) are burried inside the alt and require soldering and pressing in.
Any electronic device on the vehicle may have suffered damage which will sooner or later manifest itself by malfunction.

I would not go quite this far as electronic components either work or they do not, those that suffer instant death are of coarse gone, those that have not should be OK, you cant really weaken these things

Is there a MB procdeure I need to adhere to change the Rear SAM ?
I don't really want to disconnect the battery after rifling through some threads here.
