Hello everyone,

I'm new to ownership of an r230 and also new to this forum, so please bear with me.

I'm having an issue with the Vario roof where by sometimes it is only opening in stages. About 1/10 times it will open or close all the way with one continuous pull of the switch,

The other times the roof will get to approx 50% open and stop, and if I carry on holding the switch, eventually visit workshop message will appear in the clocks, however..

If I lift off the switch and pull it again the roof will carry on opening and stow and lock fine, the same with closing, it will get to about 30% and I'll have to release the switch, and pull it again to get it to move to the next stage of closing.

I've checked for any signs of water ingress in the boot and it's bone dry, the vacuum pump looks to be in good order and the level of hydraulic fluid can be seen to be just about on the minimum mark, rising to just about half way between min/max when the roof is open. All the central locking and other vacuum powered functions are working correctly at this time.

Is it possible the fluid level is my problem? Maybe it needs to be well within the min and max marks when roof closed?

Or is it more likely a switch or sensor issue that's causing the roof to stop at certain points and not progress past the next sensor?

I'm quite handy with car DIY and I've been researching a lot into the car, it's quirks and problems since buying, and upon looking in the forum I can find lots of threads about the roof not functioning at all but this doesn't seem to be my issue, as the roof is happy to complete the cycle but only in stages....

I've recently replaced the boot struts as these were completely dead, and I also had a look at the vacuum pump for the soft close feature as this has cracks in stopping the operation, but I've now reassembled all of this back to how it was. Just for context in case it's likely to be something I've caused with tinkering. I also disconnected the boot battery twice while trying to fix the soft close, but again everything else is functioning normally since reconnecting.

Thankyou in advance for any ideas/help and thankyou for welcoming me to the forum.
