How easy is it and what's required to get the built in telephone system working? All the buttons are there - steering wheel and centre console/radio, so what's required - just a sim card, and if so, where does it go?

If it has never had a phone before, you need a full "prewiring kit" which incorporates sharksfin rear aerial, wiring and a phone cradle for your phone which fits inside the centre armrest. I understand that it is neither easy nor cheap to install-probably a specialist job, I suspect.

If your armrest lid is one solid piece then its not prewire. Prewired E's have a split armrest lid as it opens out from the middle to allow you to insert the phone in the cradle.

jberks is almost correct. I however, have an '04 E320 with two-tier armrest as as my thread testifies - and this car has no prewiring. This was also confimed by a Merc dealer. Having said that, with my track record of Merc ownership thus far - it could just be me!

Ah - they all have 2 tier armrests. The difference is with the lid and what is in the top half. If the lid had a split down the middle and so one half opens to the left and the other to the right - then expect to find a prewire cradle inside. If the lid opens front to back in one single piece, then it's not a prewire.

on later E211s, you can get a blue tooth module that sits inside the console box, rather than a handset. It can be done, but it is a dear do though, I remember the dealer saying it cost around £2k to retrofit telephone pre-wiring........though an indie may be able to slice that considerable. Having lived with/without it, it's a good to have. Something like a Parrott may be a compromise, but Im not an expert - others may comment?

See my 'Another 'phone question' thread for my experience and advice from others. Do avoid Halfords!!

Hi

I think that you will need a phone cradle for your mobile phone if your car has telephone pre wirering fitted, hope that this is helpfull.
