Hi,

VIN No. WDB2110262A606222
Engine No. 648961 30 076464

According to my local MB dealership, they have a service dipstick for manually checking the engine oil level in the E320 CDi engine (3.2ltr. straight-six).

If true, there must be an aperture somewhere on the engine block through which this service dipstick passes.

I would be much more confident with the accuracy of a traditional dipstick to that of the indecisive electronic oil level sensor.

Does anyone know if there is a dipstick aperture on the 3.2ltr. E320 CDi engine, and if so, where it is located?

Has anyone bought, or made, a dipstick for this application?

Thanks,

Razoo

My understanding is that the dipstick tube is still in place, but has a blanking plug instead of a dipstick. I also believe MB dealers are reluctant to sell the dipstick they use and there was a thread where someone had made their own.

Thanks Russ,

I have been searching the MB Forums for information on how to make dipsticks, both for the E320 CDi engine, and the 722.6XX transmission.

I have found several posts referring to homemade dipsticks, especially the transmission dipstick, but none actually showing how to make them, and specifically how to calibrate them.

If someone can give me the link to making the dipsticks, I would be grateful.

Thanks,

Mike

Really? So is it impossible to use an oil extractor - I thought many dealers did all oil changes using extraction now?

I have noticed Rory that the newer cars have them again,,I know that the newer cars have them, I think that my 2002 car sits in the middle of no where.

At a mini meet today we were talking about this and we felt it was better to use the drain plug if we do it ourselves and even a mini flush to wash any bits out

You should still be able to do this, but would have to fit a new plug on the end of the dipstick tube when done.

I've just spent a happy half-hour with my head under the bonnet looking for the elusive engine dipstick aperture. I didn't find it :(

Two questions please:

1. What number is used to refer to my engine? Is it a 211?

The reason I ask is that I have found a website in the US that sells more Mercedes' dipsticks than you can shake a er... um... dipstick at. They refer to them by 3-digit numbers, such as: 112, 113, 271, 272, 642, etc. I can't see a 211 though :(

2. Assuming it exists, where is the service dipstick aperture on my engine likely to be (nearside, offside, front, back) and what does it look like?

Thanks,

Razoo

Dipsticks

Hi,

Was just reading your postings about oil level dipsticks....or rather the lack of one!. I am very pleased that the 320 CDi V6 engine in my C320 CDi has a dipstick.

It is so much easier to check the oil level using a dipstick, than on my previous C200K which had an electronic oil level gauge one had to rely on.

As my car was registered in 2006, I suppose as Malcolm says Mercedes started supplying oil level dipsticks on later models.

The dip stick tube is under the engine cover at the right hand rear of the engine when looking from the front. It has a red plastic cap on it which can just be pulled off.
You will need to unscrew the engine cover although the later covers just pull off.

Hi Paul,

I spent a long time (over 18 months) searching for the right E-Class E320 for me. There was a lot of disappointment along the way!

I was very tempted to stretch my budget and by a pre-facelift 2005/55 E320 CDi with the first of the V6 engines and 7-speed transmissions.

One thing I noticed when I lifted the bonnet of the V6 was the fact that it had a proper dipstick. What a selling point! ;)

[Clarkson mode] Unfortunately, this particular Merc looked like it had been owned by someone called Julian who had never discovered the bonnet catch :) [/Clarkson mode]

The engine and engine bay were filthy and the power steering was seriously haemorrhaging fluid. The autumn leaves trapped in the drainage gulleys had turned to compost, and the engine oil was almost off the dipstick. I gave it a miss.

Off topic: one interesting observation I made about the 3.2 ltr CDi straight-six vs the 3.0 ltr. CDi V6 was fuel consumption. I had managed to borrow both models for extended test drives (a 2003 3.2 ltr. and a 2007 facelift 3.0 ltr.).

On my work run, I easily achieved over 39 mpg from the 3.2 ltr. straight-six. The best the 3.0 ltr. V6 returned was 33.8 mpg. My own 3.2 ltr. straight-six, bought 4 weeks ago, regularly returns over 40 mpg on my work run.

I have always liked straight-six engines, ever since I owned a superb 1989 Vauxhall Senator 3.0CDi (which was petrol, not diesel).

Regards,

Razoo

BTW, apologies to anyone called Julian who owns a Merc and does know the difference between a bonnet catch and a cup-holder :)

Thanks Brian, that's exactly the information I was hoping for.

I shall remove the engine cover and confirm the existence of the dipstick tube forthwith.

Now all I need to know is which dipstick to buy for my engine - which brings me back to my earlier question: what is the 3-digit reference number for a W211 E320 CDi 3.2 ltr. straight-six engine (engine number 648961 30 076464)?

Does the engine oil service dipstick bottom-out on the sump, like the transmission service dipstick does?

Anyone?

Thanks,

Razoo

Fuel Consumption.

Razoo,

While on the subject of fuel consumption my C320 CDi seems to average between 48mpg and 51mpg while driving at the legal limit on the motorway. This is a true 70mph as the speed is taken from my satellite navigation, and with the cruise control engaged, the speedometer showing about 75mph. In town driving with a very light foot the fuel consumption is about 33-36mpg.

I recently had the car remapped, and I am expecting the fuel consumption to be slightly better at a steady cruise, as the engine now produces over 400lb/ft of torque and can hurtle along on just a hint of throttle.

Of course the C Class is the lightest vehicle which currently houses the 3 litre V6 engine, and it weighs a good deal less than the E Class so one would expect it to be more economical.
