As above, the key is firmly stuck in the lock, I can remove the panel and get the neutral/park interlock cable end out when the key is free to remove.
I'm beginning to suspect either the steering column lock or the transmission gear indicator of having a fault but there are no codes. Has anyone experienced this issue that can offer suggestions.?

If fiddling with the interlock cable frees it there's your answer.
Check the cable is attached both ends and isn't broken. Also check it's correctly adjusted.

There won't be codes for a mechanical fault.

Now get a Lexus and never look back!

Extreme but, I am on the brink of putting my w221 up. Can’t be dealing with these systems leaving you stranded and folks who refuse to run a diagnostics and perhaps a fix on the drive.

Simple and robust engineering cannot be beaten.
