Good afternoon.
Got a new S320CDi and find the headlights (standard) to be poor compared to bi-xenon lights on Range Rover.
I have a quote from MB dealer to retro fit Bi Xenons. I just wondered if this could be in any way a bad move, for instance would wiring have to be cut etc. or would it all be plug and fit.
Any help would be appreciated as I don't want to spoil a really good car or invite unreliability.
Thanks
Ben

I'd be curious to know what sort of price you got from the MB dealer. I'm quite keen to put xenon's on my C240. I know the cars are very different but hopefully it would put me in the ball park.

sorry, I know that doesn't help you much. Personally I think xenon headlights are very good and an excellent safety feature. The headlights on my C240 are cosiderably better than on my previous A6 anyway but Xenon's would be nice.

Hi & Welcome,

I don't know if you would notice the difference most of the time, the dipped beams are already Xenons, it is only the full beam that isn't. So most of the time you are driving with Xenons. At £1,100 for the option I can see why you didn't specify them on originally. You could also go for the IR Camera but that is even more ££££'s

I replaced the range Rover with s class and I know it is relative to what you are used to but find the lights really poor.
The main dealer are quoting around £1400.00 subject to increase if further work is discovered. It is probably worth it to me (I hope !)

Just checking online as I don't have my S Class brochure with me and it has Halogen headlights as standard the previous W220 S Class had Xenons as standard and Bi Xenons as an option. Looks like a bit of cost cutting on MB's part on the new model. :-(

If the dip beam was xenon that would probably have been ok , the rest of the car seems good, powerful compared to my previous car, pity about the lights

MB retro fit do not involve cutting wires, the end job would be the same had you had them from new.

If you had a diesel Range Rover then almost anything will seem powerful in comparison even when chipped.
As you will have handed over a serious amount of folding I would do a deal with the dealer. If it is less than 30 days you could always say you are going to return the car and go for a BM instead. I'm sure they would sort something out for you..

Thanks for all the advice, I have given them the go-ahead. My main worry was if the job involved wirecutters and insulation tape !!

When the cars are built, these things like retrofit wiring are built into the car. I have all of the details for all of them. the end result will be that no one would ever know, and you will get a nice bright warning label warning of the high voltage, enjoy your car and welcome to the forum.

I am looking forward to the improved vision, I was disappointed at the poor (halogen) lights. The sales team thought they were xenon dipped beam (based on the look of them) but the brochure describes them as not. I wondered if retro-fitting is common practice. When I took delivery of the car it was fitted with the glue and tyre inflator, but the dealer has obtained a spare and new housing to accommodate the spare. I do quite a bit of France and Spain motoring and feel more confident with a wheel. The car was ordered by the dealer on spec. and I bought it rather than them putting it on the road as a demo, this meant that there were certain things I would have added ( like IR night vision, better radio and garage door opener etc.) and others which I would not have chosen (like the 20" AMG wheels and factory fitted body kit). I like the car it is quick and smooth. I particularly like the automatic braking system and the rear view camera. The sat. nav. is a little behind the Land Rover system in so much as only partial post code entry is possible and also the radio is not muted during navigation announcements.
I have had a good moan now but must say what a nice car it is.
Thanks again for the advice.

just a note i dont think the new xenons headlamps will be covered under 3 yr warranty as they are not a factory fit.
