Have you tried closing the boot separator ?

If the answer is "yes", spray the microswitches with contact cleaner.

It is possible to close the boot separator and not close the micro switch so you get the error message when trying to open the roof.

Open the boot separator, then close it again paying attention that the micro switch closes.

Problem solved !!...............happy days!

The pin that locates in the switch holder had a bit snapped off - temporary solution is some tape around the pin until I can get a new pin (any ideas where from?).Thanks for all the help

If you've got the bits I'd glue them together with a rod in the middle for strength - If your SL is like my SLK, Mercedes only sell the boot separator as one unit... :(
