My SL was supplied with 17 inch wheels. On the recent service I was advised to replace all four tyres due to sidewall cracking (date code 2016). I have always thought the wheels looked too small and not wide enough at the rear so I acquired a set of 18 inch Avior wheels. Took them to have new tyres fitted on Saturday and there are no sensors on the wheels. I then had one of the tyres removed from the original 17 inch wheels and again, just a normal rubber valve stem with no TPMS sensor.

There are no error warnings for tyre pressures and in the recent past I did get a warning for front n/s tyre pressure as it had a slow leak.

Would I be correct in assuming the TPMS is done by the ABS wheel speed sensor and that's why there are no TPMS sensors in the wheels?

Also, the new 18 inch wheels with the 255/40/18 front and 285/35/18 rear should be the same rolling radius as the 255/45/17 and should not interfere with the TPMS system?

I called my local Mercedes dealer but they could only tell me that the TPMS sensors are "greyed out" on the look up with my car details.

Any help would be gratefully received,

Thanks - Rob

Mercedes had two systems TPMS that used the valve to send reading of the "exact" tyre pressure that you could view in the car OR TPLW (Tyre Pressure Loss Warning) that would warn if it detected a loss of pressure by the rpm of each wheel and the ABS sensors but doesn't give you the pressures nor have the special valves.

As long as thew new wheels/tyres have the same overall diameter then the ABS/ESP and TPMS system won't be affected
