2009 E320 W211 OM642.920 - Fault Code 2195

Hi,

My 2009 E320 W211 OM642.290 is having trouble starting (long crank). White smoke out of exhaust and smell of fuel.

Takes multiple attempts. Have to let it prime and wait 30 seconds then crank and eventually it starts.

Once warmed up it starts fine afterwards. It’s after leaving it overnight and coming back that the issue reoccurs.

Have scanned and get the following fault code on the Engine module:

2195 - Lambda sensor heating, upstream; signal line is interrupted / Permanent


Please find the scan before and after fault codes were cleared.

Only 1 permanent code comes back which is the one above (2195).

I’d be more inclined to believe you have glowplug problems. Just because they didn’t come back immediately doesn’t mean they are fine. Check the resistance of each plug. They’ll give starting problems exactly as you describe if a couple are bad. Glow module can be faulty too

Thanks for the advice.

I’ll get the multimeter out today and report back the results.

Is the glow plug order to the relay plug pins 1-6 (so front of engine LHS plug is number 1, then 2 then 3, then the other side from front is 4, then 5 then 6?)

Is anything else I should be looking at?

Also how do you remove the connectors from the top of the glow plugs? Don’t won’t to damage them.

Swap left to right, then you are correct

Narrow nose pliers on the plastic connector, bit of a tug straight up.

What ground do I use when measuring the resistance through the glow plug module connector?

Readings from multimeter

Direct to Glow Plug head and ground (engine hoist lift point)

6 = 1650 ohms
5 = no reading open circuit
4 = 3500 ohms
3 = 0.3 ohms
2 = 1 ohms
1 = 1.5 ohms

(1.5ohms resistance through device)

From relay plug pins

12 open circuit
8 open circuit
7 open circuit
6 4.4 ohms
5 open circuit
4 open circuit
3 4.4 ohms
2 4.5 ohms
1 4.9 ohms

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the glow plug relay connector so I can understand the above readings?

I posted this last week on another thread , it’s an om642 but it’s in a Jeep so various intake differences but glow relay and everything else the same and it’s the best video out there in showing how and what to test and explaining wiring

Thank you for your help.

Looks like I need 3 x new glow plugs for cylinder 4, 5 and 6.
Plugs changed (cylinder 4, 5 and 6).

All came out without issue.

Had the engine really hot and had soaked with plus gas the previous week.

Cracked off really easily without any worry of shearing off.

Replaced with Bosch GLP202 from GSF for approx £9 each.

Smeared with a dab of ceramic grease on the threads.

Installed plugs using a plastic tube pushed over the top to ensure they weren’t cross threaded into the cylinder head.

Torqued to 11Nm.

All looks good so far.

No coil light after startup. (Originally light would disappear before replacing glow plugs after 30-60 seconds).

Just need to confirm on a cold morning and after leaving to sit for a few days.

If I still have issues I will be replacing the battery with a Varta G14.

Appreciate the help. Thank you.

Started this morning but did take a few cranks.

But not as bad as before but still concerning it takes a while to crank before starting.

Still showing the 2195 code however after replacing the 3 defective glow plugs.

So what next?

Glow plug module?

Replacing other bank of Glow plugs (cylinder 1, 2 and 3)?

Replace lambda sensor?

Replace battery?

All the secondhand diesel cars I have owned have had a full set of glow plugs fitted at the first sign of failure. I would do the other 3 for future peace of mind and to rule them out of the existing problem.

How many volts was the battery showing when you tried it this morning, because if it’s down near 12.0v you need a new one .
Then I would change the other glow plugs and fit a new relay if the new battery did not work . There is only so much cost saving you can do , sometimes these parts just need changing

you should always swap out the control module too - later logic in newer ones - little point in destroying all the hard-work with a bit that's about to pop anyway - many places sell the plugs and controller as a service kit....

It was showing less than 12.0V from memory.

That isn’t with a multimeter across the terminals.

That’s the readout on the centre screen when you enter the service reset mode (3 pushes on the dial to reset the odometer on the speed indication screen).

Ah so really I should of bought a Beru GSE114 glow plug module relay, 3 more plugs and a Varta G14 battery.

if you have an original (or other) AGM battery - peel up the label and fight the strange screw tops lids - and refill the battery so the black plates vanish as the white tissue paper type glass matting swells up - thus bringing back continuity for the cells - don't go mad but in 24 hrs recheck likely will need doing again - after a mega charge and a few months remembering its function - you have another 5 years left for free..... it should be damp in there not taking a bath like a conventional battery
