Hello everyone. I have a 2009 ML63 AMG which has the start/stop button that can be placed in the ignition in place of the actual key. It starts and stops the engine as it should but what I've found is that when I stop the engine the electrics i.e. dash and Command Screen all remain on and even when I exit the car and close the door they still remain on. And perhaps more importantly is that I then cannot lock the doors as it will not respond to the key fob. Any ideas?

Need a star session. Note you are in Quatar from your other post, doubt you have an indy nearby, so a trip to a dealer may be needed.
Since your saving huge on fuel at 40p a litre, you will be fine :)

How dies it react when nit using the start trop switch in ignition, ie just the key?

I will be avoiding the dealer like the plague. In my experience if you go anywhere near one over here with even a brake wear warning light they'll tell you that you need new tyres, and window regulators, and an engine! I'm going to check again but I think it does what it's meant to do with the key itself. It seems that with the push button in place it won't shut the electrics down after the engine has stopped, as would happen after removing the physical key. And as it's all still awake it has a mind of its own and refuses point blank to lock the doors. Presumably it will go to sleep eventually but I'm not keen on sitting beside the car for 20 minutes for it to nod off and then lock the doors.

The update on this is that I can start and stop the car with the push button but the electrics do not shut down. Even if I remove the button from the ignition still nothing happens. But if I insert the actual ignition key and then remove it (even without turning it) the car will shut down and allow me to then lock the doors on exit.

I fear you will need to visit the dealer. They pull exactly the same trick over here, just do the same as I do, and say "no".

It is a small word, but with practice, it becomes easier to say. Just practice saying it over and over, "No", and repeat as appropriate.

You could try a new stop/start button.
I had new one bought for my E63 and its under £40 for a new one.
The eBay copies for peanuts work as well;)

I'm pretty good at that. In fact with dealers and mechanics here I tend to start with "no" before they've even opened their mouths and then work backwards from there. :)

since the issue appears only with the ss button in place and is fine without it then I say the issue is with the ss - hence the question above.

Thus get a new ss from the dealer.

I have no idea how they work - do they need car coding??? gen question for the forum

if the batteries in the key are low on power - can it still transmit enough info to the car so it really knows that you took it out....

if it works with the key (like a grown up car) its the info about the key being present or not that the car isn't understanding... ?

its dead common for the antenna's in the door handles to go wrong (if I'm correct there should be at least 6, one for each door, the boot and another inside the car - but for some reason I think they have 9) but I'd start with the spare key and see if it behaves, and then replace the batteries in both keys anyway

if you have keyless you don't use the key to lock it... that wouldn't be key-less.... new key batteries and double check the user manual

No coding required for a replacement Stop/Start button.
