My car seems to get hot quite readily, even just waiting at the lights. The Brooklands manual says the engine fan cuts in via a bi-metallic strip.
It doesn't appear to work from a coolant temp switch in the cylinder head like the earlier 8 valve models. This looks correct also because there's no visible electrical connection to the fan.

Any ideas how I can test whether it's working ?
Thanks,
John

are you sure there is no fan switch-this is usually located on the front right side of the cylinder head while looking at the engine with the bonnet open.

the electromagnetic clucthch fan has two wire which lead to below the fan and sometimes not visible unless you specifically know where to look.

if you have indeed the switchless variety, then it is a viscous operated fan which cuts in when the car is at about 100degrees on the temp gauge, you should hear a loud roar like an aeroplane when the fan is on -you could test it by letting the the car idle with the bonnet open and as the engine warms up you will hear the fan cut in and make a loud roar.

good luck.
