Has anyone else experienced a slight rattling/knocking noise when the engine is cold? I recently changed the timing chain & tensioner - all seemed to go fine. This has developed since then (not immediately)

I have an ongoing problem with the carb setup, and haven't checked the timing out yet, but don't want to keep going with it if it's going to frell the engine...

this is most likely your tappets. on your car they're probably hydraulically actuated, meaning that adjustment is limited. the engine will probably go on forever without attending to the problem, but the solution is relatively painless - fit new tappets. this can be done with the head in situ; half a day max, if your even mildly competent. garage should do it for under a hundred quid, parts included. hopefully.

Streethawk, I agree with Flagstaff, sounds like defective hydraulic tappets, but he's maybe just a touch optimistic with garage cost. I believe the hydraulic tappets are around £8 apiece x 8 (or x 16 of course if it's the 111 engine) - and add a new cover gasket. Doesn't leave a lot from £100 for half a day's labour!
However, you appear to know your way around an engine so a nice canny DIY job for you. Remember to fill the tappet chambers with engine oil before installation (haven't actually done the job personally but I understand this is best).
Good luck, Tom.

Iye, don't (do not) bring me into this. Cheek of you, Mellow-mellow.
I find that quite offensive; so be quiet you, or you'll (you will) be sorry.:-D

BTW: I got honours in English, but still cannot (can't) spell for the life of me.

Cheers for that guys - I'd hoped it was something fairly simple and that I could cope with (please don't use that filthy G word around me , you know "garage")

can back the diagnosis up with the fact that there is a pinking noise when under heavy acceleration (anything over mild acceleration come to think of it)

now all i need to do is sort out the carb & (eventually) the self-levelling suspension & i'll be a happy dude!

From my cycling experience, you would be amazed how much a chain lengthens when worn. If you replaced a chain, then you would see (hear) a difference for sure.

Did you change the oil? I noticed a big difference in noise with the changing to synthetic oil.

Yeah, my gsxr chews up chains, i have to replace mine every year...

Hmm, i suppose i could give synth a try - has anyone found any affordable suppliers for it?

I've heard that synth is only any use if you use if from day one... anyone know if there's any truth in this one?

Not so in my opinion. Any oil having a superior performance can only be better than a poorer one at any oil change. However I'd recommend flushing before the changeover to synthetic. Plenty of it available here at keen prices -
