My Mercedes 200 TE 1990 (190K) speedo went from 0 to 140 MPH and is staying at that point. Will not move, but car is still registering miles.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Swith off engine and try to slow car down with a firm press of the brakes...How many miles have you been doing 140mph for...??????

Justa as a note Dug,

I think you will find that driving about with a knackered speedo can get on the wrong side of plod (if stopped).

If you are stopped best just say... "Oh, Sorry Hofficer I thought I was doing 140mph !!"

Of course real drivers throw away the rear-view mirror and the speedo. The mirror because you've either seen any cars now behind you when you overtook them, and the speedo becuase you already know what the top speed is and why would you drive any slower?

On a slighty more serious note, if you strip out the speedo you may be able to repair it, but personally I wouldn't bother. Its certainly worth removing it and having a good look, but anything repairable should be fairly obvious such as a loose spring or clip. Then again, if its failed once you have to consider whether its likely to be a recurrent problem. There are people that repair them, but personally, I'd just pop in a used replacement. I would imagine you can get W124 speedo's quite cheaply from the breakers as they are not common failures so the shelves should be full of them. I suspect even a new one may be surprisingly reasonable!

Your speedo has bitten the dust, time for a new one, or a used one, they're about £50 for a decent used one.
