Hi,I have just purchased a 1989 200te,whilst I am very pleased with it I am a little concerned to how low geared it seems,it is only doing 20mph/1000revs,is this normal? It is shifting into fourth but the one thing I have noticed is it that the torque convertor does not lock up(as happened on my previous Range Rover at 51mph)do they lock up on merc's?I have rang 2 different auto box specialists and got two different answers! Thanks in advance for any help,I dare say this won't be my last posting!!!!

Hi Ant

If the vehicle is about 4-4500rpm @ 80mph.Then thats ok. I am not sure what you are referinging to. As long as the box dosn't slur its changes you are ok.

Regards

Andy @ www.mercedesservicing.com

PS. By the look of you particulars you are not far from me. Pop in one of the days.

Thanks Andy I work in Smethwick at Parceline, are you far from there?According to my RR handbook the torque converter locks up to prevent slippage and it acted like another gear dropping the rpm by @300rpm,my fathers volvo740 does it as well.

Thanks again Andy,I will pop in soon with the car,do you know of a "good"body shop around this area? The car I have bought has had"two lady owners"and has got the usual little parking dents in the doors and one on the bonnet!!Whilst you can't notice them too bad I now know they are there and they are niggling me!

Ant.

I know exactly what you mean about the torque converter lock up. One of my other cars, a 1991 Sierra 2.0 Auto had lock up on 3rd and 4th...exactly as you say it acts like a 5th gear and drops the revs slightly. It also prevents the slip that auto boxes tend to have when accelerating. Its supposed to give the direct - immeidate kind of accelration you would get in a manual. Its an excellent idea, and i would imagine some newer mercs have it. I was a little disappointed when i discovered my 190 didnt do it. As for the revving, again i noticed that they are slightly lower geared cars than others i have driven. However you do get used to it pretty quickly.

Cheers
