C class coupe 2012 c220
Hi, I recently purchased a brand new C220 coupe blue efficiency and have covered around 4000 miles and I am only getting a combined mpg of 38 from the start. I travelled to London and back today covering 60 miles each way averaging 65-70 MPH in cruise control and managed to get 44 MPG. This seems to be very low as the book shows 53 combined for this model. Has anyone else had this problem and what were the reasons / solution?

Thanks

Hello Rosscodavies, welcome to the forum, we had a thread on this a whie ago it seemed nearly everyone was saying that the fuel consumption gets better over time, there will soon be more input on this. Hope this helps.

Don't panic. It will improve. Best I have had from an older generation w 203 (2001) was 59.8 mpg at an average of 60 mph - but the car did have around 160,000 miles on it.

I really like the style of the cluster on newer MBs. Welcome to the forum. :)

Doesn't having cruise control lower the MPG of a car as well?

Dreaming of a CL55k - one day maybe....
Theoretically yes, in practice No as it eliminates that "speed up / slow down" that most people do without realising

I hope your mpg improves. I have to say that I had one of the last pre-BE cars (a C220cdi) and the improvement from 5K to 44K was very little - from 40 to 24mpg (measured brim to brim), Maybe the BE cars improve over time - I certainly hope so as I now have a BE E250cdi and that is having trouble getting anywhere near a much improved mpg!

What a travesty of the truth - comments on the above website follow

"Why the EC figures are so optimistic
The prescribed EC test is a lab test carried out to simulate a mix of different types of driving and arrive at ‘combined’ CO2 emission and fuel consumption figures.

Because vehicle taxation in Europe is now based on CO2 emissions, manufacturers naturally optimise their engines to achieve the lowest possible CO2 in the tests.

This gives a correspondingly low fuel consumption figure. Unfortunately the relevant EC Directives prescribe that this figure and only this figure can be publicised by manufacturers, even though it is unlikely to be achieved by the average driver in real life conditions.
