Over these first few months of Viano ownership I've pretty well sorted out all the unknowns with the exception of the second battery system.

This comes up on the build spec as E28 ADDITIONAL BATTERY FOR RETROFITTED CONSUMER and is an identical second battery under the driver's seat... the main one being under the passenger seat. This second battery has some sort of split charge control box in its compartment. On the build spec it also has E33 BATTERY MANAGEMENT listed which may or may not be related.

I would really like to find a wiring diagram for this second battery setup or a data/service sheet detailing exactly how it is plumbed in and what it might feed.

If it's anything like I fitted to my Landy the charging operates once the main battery is up to voltage. Quite a simple circuit but clever enough :)

Thanks. Yes... the problem really is that all the info so far is how it might work... not how it does. For example I've heard on the Vito/Viano/Sprinter it could be set up so with the ign on the second battery can work in parallel with the main battery for exceptional cold starts etc... but once the ign is off it disconnects completely to be like a stand alone leisure battery.

The reason I'm so keen to know is I have several extra touch-operation roof lights none of which work... also only one of my four 12v outlets in the rear area work. My Viano is ex-police and was de-commissioned by them with respect to radios, blues and sirens etc so that adds an extra layer of what is fed by what to the equation. Hence I'd like to put it all back as it should be.

Without a wiring diagram the only way would be to remove front seats and carpets to see where the wires from that second battery run to and I'd love to save that hassle.

My friends 518 sprinter (Ex-Merseyside Po Po Riot van) was decommissioned the "usual" police garage way... cut through all the wires and pull... :(
I've "some" experience in Police vehicle wiring and the best way is to take the panels off and see what's been connected where.. depending upon who did the install they can go multiple routes and pick up from various points - as long as it looks pretty when it's back together and the wires are all safe and out of sight there generally wasn't a standard fitting

Yes despite this vehicle being overall excellent there's been a bit of that. Bundles of wires with no obvious destination pushed behind panels and where bolts into rivnuts fixed items to the floor and were seized just pull the equipment off leaving a twisted knuckle grazing bolt sticking up. Oh and scuffed up the glovebox lid knocking their glocks on it chanting "let's get 'um boys".

Looking more into this twin battery setup today noticed when de-policing they'd had the driver's seat base out to remove radio equipment... and in replacing it hadn't fed the permanent live to a rear power socket through the adj grommet but trapped the wire tightly between metal seat base and metal floor.... just waiting to short and blow its fuse.

Anyway worked out the dual battery system by wire tracing and voltmeter testing. With the ign on or off prior to starting the main and aux battery are totally separate. Once the engine is running the relay/controller connects them as one with full size battery-starter type size cables. It seemingly does this immediately once the engine starts rather than waiting for the main battery to be fully charged.

The bit I really wanted to find out... there is nothing left connected to the aux battery... just remains of a cut off twin core wire leading off to wherever. Think I'll wire in the rear/load compartment power sockets plus the extra roof lights to the second battery.
