Hi everyone im very close to pulling the trigger and joining the elegant darkside (ive always been a bmw man dont shoot me lol) on a 2015 A200d with the 2.1d engine after a google search it looks like it might be the OM651? The cars mainly going to be for my girlfriend whos a nurse and might be starting a community job doing lots of miles so I want something as reliable as possible for her but all she cares about apart from reliability is how the car looks and the colour her choices were a mini, 1 series or A class but im not a fan of the BMW and Peugeot 4 pots so got her to accept an A Class and steered her towards the 2.1d
My knowledge of mercs is almost zero, but ive heard nothing but good stuff regarding reliability from my taxi driver dads friends, im sure one of them had a E Class 2.1d with almost 400k miles although they arent technical people and might of got lucky. Apart from potential timing chain issues i cant seem to find anything else to make sure im going in with eyes wide open. Are the timing chain issues over blown, is there anything i should look out for apart from obvious rattles and knocks? Is the timing chain classed as a serviceable item to enthusiast and what is typical cost to replace these chain and tensioner on a preventative basis?
I always do my servicing on my own intervals as i dont agree with this long life and sealed for life nonsense and change the oil every 6k miles whats the thoughts in the Merc world stick the their schedule or be a fanny like myself? How often should we change the gearbox oil?
