2016 cls shooting brake
Hi everyone. I looking at purchasing a CLS shooting brake amg line premium this weekend coming. I have found one, how ever it’s from a reputable garage but only has MB service history upto 33000. The car is currently at 71000 miles. The garage (not a MB garage) claim they will service it and put 12 months mot on it (mot ran out in April this year). There is a 14 day return policy although it may cost around £500 to get it back, car is priced around £15k. I’m running a check through car checker this Friday to see if anything comes up. Any constructive thoughts and your experience would be welcome, I’m new to this group. Thankyou in advance.

Hello and welcome

How reputable is the garage?
What’s their reviews like?
Have you used them previously?

How important is a full service history to you?
It will reduce the value of the car.
It should be serviced every 12 months or 15k miles, whichever comes first.
How many services has it missed?
When you come to resell the car, that missing history will put many buyers off.
I wouldn't touch a Mercedes without a complete service history, but that's just me.

I believe there is a member considering selling his CLS estate shortly. That will have a complete history.

Has the selling dealer been able to check with Mercedes for their digital service history in case it has been done by a main dealer or by an MB independent who updates the service history?

40,000 miles is a big gap if no servicing, albeit it would probably be having problems by now if hadn't had a service at all

Can you check the oil and air filter before they service it to see the state they are in?
How are the brakes and tyres?
They will be indicators as to whether it's been ignored, abused, run on a shoe string or had proper servicing and money lavished on it.
Is the Sat Nav upto date etc?
All indicators......

And yes do a thorough car vertical/ car checker on it

Is the car a lot cheaper than similar age and mileage ones with a full service history ?

My car was bought from MB with a full digital service record at around 5 yrs old ... the sat nav had never been touched from new.

My 2013 CLS has a complete mercedes history and sat nav maps were still original ones.
Never been updated.
Not sure mercedes history is worth having.

As Wighty, is the selling price less than one with a FSH? I wouldn't place too much in any dealer giving a car a 'full service' before they sell it. At the very most they might change the oil and filter and at the very least, they won't do a thing apart from checking its level! If its cheaper, then the risk may be worth it to not have a full FSH but 15k is a lot of money.

The question really should be why is there a gap in history? You don’t have to be an Einstein to answer that!

If someone’s serviced themselves or put it into a local garage they trust then, they will be diligent enough to shove the receipts into the history folder. So either way there is evidential proof of maintenance.

The tales of it’s been serviced but paperwork has been lost is pure bs. You have to be an imbecile to fall for that. Has it been clocked and later receipts been thrown away to help avoid detection cannot be overlooked. Modern cars can hide miles well.

You want to be looking for a car with low owners, a full history be it dealer or any independent garage to prove it’s seen regular basic maintenance at the very least. I wouldn’t get hooked up on dealer history as that’s factually to provide idiots with the illusion of lower service/maintenance costs so they can pay more payments.

Check the MOT history online. That will confirm annual mileage and a lot of advisories or fails would suggest it hasn’t been cared for.
