Hi all, we've only had our 68 reg C300 Coupe for a couple of months but yesterday we needed to get it recovered from our drive.

On pushing the Start button, there is a click presumably from a relay which sounds like it's coming from somewhere between the engine and battery compartment, but no start.

It may be a coincidence, but just before this we had been loading stuff in the boot, and when I went to start nothing happened and the dash informed me that the rear seat wasn't locked in position. After locking the seat we tried again, no message this time but also no start. As I say, maybe unrelated.

I know there must be many reasons for not starting, but I was hoping there may be a 'usual suspect' cause in these cars which others have cone across in the past. The recovery technician did try boost starting it just in case the battery was weak, but no difference.

Any help much appreciated. Cheers.

I'd first check the battery - should be >12.4V with engine off
I'd then look at getting codes read and see what shows up

I made sure all the 'rules' are obeyed when starting, as we quickly learned after buying the car about all the conditions which need to be met to start the thing :D This is what made me suspicious about the 'rear seat not locked' message at first, as if there was something like this preventing it starting. It seemed more likely to me than something mechanical suddenly failing, eg the starter motor, as we had already made several trips that morning.

No message on the dash since the seat was locked, just the dash lights as normal as the ignition is turned on and a quiet click from something under the bonnet.

you can reveal the battery charge level in the dash itself there are youtube videos showing you how to bring up the 'service reset' menu, and in there you can see the battery charge, check there first to verify that it's charged enough before troubleshooting anything further

If the car has been recovered from your drive , does Mercedes now have it ?

It's with the local garage but they wont have time to look at it until the end of the week apparently.

Under the warranty the car can be taken to any approved garage, but our recovery policy is 'to the nearest garage'.

Best of luck with it all buddy . It’s a damn nuisance.

Weigh up the potential cost of moving it to an approved garage Vs the cost of non warranty work.

The garage had a look at it today and guess what, it started first time

But after several times off & on the fault occurred and they have diagnosed a faulty starter motor (a tap with a hammer freed it up apparently).

Hopefully it's that simple. The recovery guy the other day actually said 5 years for a starter is about right, which shocked me as the only time I've needed to replace one before was on a 40 year old MG Midget!

Luckily our local garage is approved so this is under warranty. If we'd had the choice we would've had it taken to Mercedes, but hopefully the local place has sorted it.

if it is indeed the starter motor then I'd strongly suspect the 'start/stop' feature that's built into all EU6 cars nowadays, I always turn if off when I get in the car

What a pita. I really do hope it’s the starter as these things can be tediously draining.

Can’t beat old cars for common sense and durability.
